It's not a good month for me either, having to go through the same issues, so every time I glance at the newspapers and read about the death of a celebrity, an icon, a legend; whatever you want to label him or her, I shake my head!

A tribute to the six legends above: five musicians and singers and a great wrestler.

July's been a challenging month anyway! A blistering day, nearly every day with a sink hole to boot at Tanjong Katong, road-work jams and an apartment on fire at Toa Payoh with two deaths. And of course, the ever raging wars in the background that's been going on forever. This is the first time in decades that I feel like a news reporter and not a blogger.

This short take is very personal. That's how I feel this month, a very challenging month and definitely not a happy month for some of us. Sorry!

Not in any order, the photographs have only the demise dates of these great stars...

July 2025! Arghh!!!

And When I Die [Partial Lyrics]

I'm not scared of dying
And I don't really care
If it's peace you find in dying
Well, then let the time be near

Swear there ain't no heaven
And I pray there ain't no hell
But I'll never know by living
Only by dying will tell
Yes, only by dying will tell, yeah
Only my dying will tell.

Letter 1 From Nicole:

Hi Andy,

I wish I had found *this page sooner. My aunt was one of The Friday Girls. In the picture of the purple sleeve above, she was the girl in the middle. Her name was Chin Oi Min. Unfortunately, my aunt passed on two days ago and I chanced upon your site while we were looking for her songs. I believe that she was still in contact with one of two of the girls (I think Rolana was one of them) in the group before her passing.

And by the way, thank you for immortalising The Friday Girls on the post 👩.

Letter 2 From Nicole:

Hi Andy,

Here are some photos of The Friday Girls that we found while going through my aunt’s belongings:

The second photo is a card that they gave out to fans (my aunt - rightmost) and the third is a photo of my aunt and Rolana, taken when Rolana came to Singapore for a visit in 2017.

Hi Nicole,

Thanks for the blog visit and writing in too. I am sorry to hear of Ms Chin's passing away.
RIP Oi Min. Hope this post will make you feel better and that Rolana will read it and write to this blog.

Warm regards,
Andy.

Songs by this group were usually folk and a few originals written by the late ROBERT SURIYA, band leader of THE BOYS. He also played lead guitar.

The FRIDAY GIRLS were together only in 1967, recorded a few vinyl on the Philips labels, appeared on television, and performed at the National Theatre when they were at their peak. They had always been accompanied by THE BOYS.

Good bye my dear Brother Paul Cheong [75 years young], who passed away this morning at 11.40. It's the saddest day for me and our family, not forgetting his friends and his own folks. My brother, thanks for all the memories from Serangoon Garden Estate to Jalan Rebana. And the bands you fronted; Paul and The Herons, The Firebyrds, The Silver Strings and the release of two albums, if not mistaken, under Polygram.

Then those important events as a host, i.e., my Wedding Anniversary, my book launch and the 50th Anniversary of my band Jerry and The Neufaces, where you sang with the group. You have always been around for our family events.

Paul you are at Peace with the Lord Almighty and the choir of Angels; someday we will meet. Till then good bye Paul. Rest In Peace.

"A Brief Encounter With The Late SG PM Lee Kuan Yew!" Says Freda Hanum. Have you?

Our former Singapore Prime Minister,
Lee Kuan Yew [LKY]
who passed away on 23 March, 2015.

Meeting Former PM Lee Kuan Yew In Person:

LKY was my mum's most favourite person; she would attend all his rallies and his talks... I was with her all along since 12 years of age. I was so excited when I had a brief encounter in a taxi and LKY was in his car driven by the chauffer, stopped by the traffic light next to our taxi.

He looked at me and gave me a wave with the most kindly smile, I shouted to my mum saying, "It's LKY there next to us!" 😃

I never forget this brief encounter with the great man of Singapore 🙏.

Freda Hanum hi!

That's an exceptionally touching story. Thanks for sharing such an important moment in your life. At Pulau Tekong Island, I couldn't even get near him but his aura and charisma attracted the crowd as they surged towards him that day.

If you had a brief encounter with the late LKY, do write in to tell us.

Thank you for your very detailed write up on Lee Yee, the No: 1 Male Singer in the 70s. To be honest, not much had written about 李逸 in English; yours is probably the most detailed write up about him that I have read so far.

I had known Lee Yee since about 1975, he and Ting Ting moved into their new house only meters from our house when they got married in mid 1975. Still remember clearly that it was soon after the release of the famous concert play, (唐伯虎点秋香) and his probably most famous and popular No: 3 album (唱首情歌给谁听)。

There are still thousands of fans following and listening to his music on YouTube, Facebook, etc. There are up to a dozen of his fan clubs on social media, some boasting more than 10,000 members。

A Tribute To The Late Robbie Robertson: By Horace Wee

The late Robbie Robertson.
Credit: Kevin Mazur / WireImage.

Generally when a person passes away, a flurry of tributes and condolences respond to the announcement. I felt emptiness and disillusionment when there was almost a deafening silence in responses on the passing of this man when the news broke on Wednesday the 9th of August 2023 in this part of our world. It seemed like the news of his passing had been hurled into dark cyber space and was lost forever in a black hole.

Robbie Robertson was an iconic guitarist, composer and musician who carved out a niche for himself in the heady days of the 60s and 70s fronting a group named, The Band. This consisted of Canadians Rick Danko on bass, pianist Richard Manuel, Robbie on guitar and Garth Hudson on organ and other instruments and was a principal architect of the group's sound. Levon Helm was the American drummer and vocalist.

The Band: Up On Cripple Creek
YouTube Video from: bluearmyfr111

Helm was known for his deeply soulful, country accented voice, multi-instrumental ability, and creative drumming style, highlighted on many of the Band's recordings. Robbie Robertson being best known for writing the anthem like song The Weight, Up On Cripple Creek and The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.

With the deaths of Richard Manuel in 1986, Rick Danko in 1999, Levon Helm in 2012, and Robbie Robertson in 2023, Hudson is the last living original member of the band.

The Band [l-r]: With Richard Manuel, Levon Helm,
Rick Danko, Garth Hudson, Robbie Robertson.

Robbie grew up in a Native American reservation during his youth and learned music from his mother’s side of the family who were Mohawk and lived on the Six Nations of the Grand River reserve. He rose to prominence with The Band backing Bob Dylan when he went from acoustic to controversial electric performances. With The Band striking out on their own, they carved a niche sound that many have not been able to copy. There were elements of folk, rock, country and Southern rock that influenced people as diverse as The Allman Brothers, George Harrison and Eric Clapton.

The very essence of The Band is captured in the classic Martin Scorsese documentary film The Last Waltz.(1978) This was their farewell concert at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. In one instance, Eric Clapton’s guitar strap comes unhinged and Robbie takes over the solo completely unfazed. He maintained a very close relationship with Martin Scorsese over the years and scored several of the films like Raging Bull, The Wolf On Wall Street and completing the forthcoming Scorsese film, Killers of the Flower Moon just prior to his passing.

May Robbie on his journey to the heavens find eternal peace.

(July 5, 1943 – August 9, 2023)

For the love and respect of his Native American heritage, donations may be made to the Six Nations of the Grand River to support a new Woodland Cultural Center.

Tina Turner: She's Still Singing Proud On The River Boat, Travelling Deep And Mountain High!

The late Ms Anna Mae Bullock
1939-2023

A few letters came through these last few days, asking why I did not pay a tribute on the passing away of Ms Tina Turner. One reason; there are too many such tributes on the blog, so I wanted to leave them out entirely, unless they are about our local Singapore singers or musicians. That too may be a problem if the information provided is unreliable.

But here goes.

I love her singing and style and first heard her way back in the mid 60's with River Deep Mountain High, and Proud Mary I think in the early 70's. She literally burned the radio [noisy, noisy], with these songs. There weren't any YouTube videos then to watch and our television station hardly screened any of these pop shows from America.

I didn't buy her vinyl records; us guys were crazy with Elvis and Ricky. Yes, and Connie Francis and Doris Day too. But she was there, at the back of my mind, a lady so full of vitality, love, sensuality and a powerful voice that she became a rock star soon enough. With Elvis as the King of Rock n Roll, she became the Queen of Rock n Roll. Like Elvis, she's a visual delight!

Tina Turner: Private Dancer. [LIVE] HDavi.
YouTubeVideo by: jpsDelarue

I first heard Tina Turner again when a university friend played it on a cassette tape. This was Canada in the mid 80's. And the song? 'What's Love Got To Do With It?' Tina was back and when YouTube came along on the internet some years later, I watched her concerts.

TT was one of the best lady African-American singers ever to hit peak performances wherever she was on stage. And the crowd? Nearly one million in one show and documented by Guinness Book. And her albums? More than 100 million copies sold! In 2018, a jukebox musical was made in her name!

Then came 24th May, 2023, Proud Mary passed away!

So Ms Turner, now that you're hitched on the river boat queen, sing your songs on the good side of the city.

God Bless You, Tina Turner! Rest In Peace. You're simply the best.

RIP Harry Belafonte: Banana Boat Song, Mary's Boy Child... A Tribute

Harry Belafonte with an RCA vinyl recording of
'Calypso' [1956], his LP that sold a million immediately.

UP TO 800 VIEWS, 40+ CHATS, COMMENTS

"Day-O, Day-O!"

Harry Belafonte is gone at 96. [March, 1927 - April 2023]

He popularised Calypso music with, 'Banana Boat Song' and 'Coconut Woman', bringing listeners into a world of sun, sand and sea amidst coconut trees, swaying palms and tarantula spiders... and sold a million copies with his first Long Play vinyl recorded in 1956. I was only 16 years old when I heard his lines:

"I see women on bended knees, Cutting cane for her family, I see men at the water side, casting nets at the surging tide..." and I was sold.

Still within the same theme came 'Jamaica Farewell'; then a quiet, sober, calm hymn: "Long time ago in Bethlehem, so the holy Bible says, Mary's boy child, Jesus Christ, was born on Christmas day..."

He had another hit called, 'Mama, Looka Boo Boo' [video below]. It's a funny song indeed and making fun of what was known in the 60s as, juvenile delinquency. "'Mama, looka Boo Boo!' they shout, Their mother told them, 'Shut up your mouth, that is your daddy.' 'Oh no, my daddy can't be ugly so...'"

He was versatile indeed, singing and recording different genres of songs he could get his hands on. He became an actor too. With such a forceful career, Mr Belafonte became a recognisable and powerful civil rights activist! Beside Elvis, he was my other singing hero!

"Sad to say, I'm on my way, Won't be back for many a day, My heart is down, I won't be turning around..."

"Daylight come and we wanna go home..."

RIP Mr Harry Belafonte, one of the best singers there is, [yes, still is] in the world today. Condolences to his family and folks at home.

Goodbye Jimmy goodbye...

A note from Larry Lai [former Rediffusion DJ, Singapore] today shocked many of us in the music community. It read, "With a heavy heart I share the news of Jimmy Chan's passing."

Truly one of the best pianists around in Singapore. Unassuming, he played anything from pops to jazz; Chinese hits to keroncong-styled Indonesian melodies and of course dance music. And when he plays, no cumbersome notes to guide him; he just lets his heart synchronize with the tunes and his fingers glide on the piano keys.

R.I.P. Tony Ng: A Tribute To Our Baba Friend, An All-Round Musician.

UP TO 1,100 VISITORS - 20 plus COMMENTS

6th May, Friday, 2022.

Tony Ng [Baba] has passed away today. He was a professional pianist, a good guitarist and an all-round musician.

I met him while he was visiting a friend a few years ago. Tony, with his usual self was so pleasant; we just clicked easily. He was very familiar with our Singapore music scene that when tertiary students needed information for their term papers on local music or pop culture, Tony was most helpful and participated during the organised interviews.

According to an SMS going around now, Tony "used to entertain our seniors with the other musicians at our SOY events in church - before Covid. He will be missed." He had even been invited to perform in Japan.

Rest In Peace Tony

Everyone who knew you provided the same statement, "He was such an easy going and loving friend..."

We'll miss you dear Tony, goodbye.

Our sincere condolences to your family.
