Gabriella Quevedo - 60s Plus Music Revivalist On Guitar

UP TO 2,000 VIEWS

Pop songs from the past will never go sour. Like the new vinyl record impressions today, being reproduced and sold again in the music market place; past pops too are being played for different reasons.

Here's one fine young lady who's been reviving senior pop music like vinyl records. She's Swedish, sweet and at 24 has 1.4 million subscribers on her YouTube channel - Gabriella9797 - with over 210 million views.

Below are three YouTube video examples. Gabriella Quevedo is making a name for herself with recordings where she plays 60s/70s music with her simple acoustic guitar. But the song interpretation... Wow. Check her out.

(The Beatles) 'Here Comes The Sun' - Gabriella Quevedo

YouTube Video - Gabriella9797 [12 million plus views].

George Harrison went to Eric Clapton's garden, fed up

with signing forms, borrowed his guitar and wrote this

song, out of 'plein air'... ['Abbey Road' album - 1969]

(Eric Clapton) 'Tears In Heaven' - Gabriella Quevedo

[3.4 million plus views]

Written in 1991 after his 4 year old son's tragic accident, Clapton

composed this piece with Will Jennings ['Titanic' song, etc].

Who would have thought this is a 90's composition.

(Led Zeppelin) 'Stairway To Heaven' - Gabriella Quevedo

[9.1 million plus views]

Jimmy Page and Robert Plant composed it and this song

became the most popular rock song of all time. Recorded

in 1970/71 it is 8 plus minutes long.

Videos - YouTube recordings.

Thank you Gabriella.

AUTHOR: ANDY YOUNG

Hi, I'm ANDY and fronted SG 60's pop bands. Enjoyed the excitement but music is only a hobby, so I took an academic path. This blog serves as a SINGAPORE COFFEE SHOP to (1) relive those years, (2) encourage stories from you, (3) keep our younger generation aware (4) help students with term papers on SG music history. I am neither a musician nor historian. No showing off past glory; completed BA and MA in Eng. Literature and Applied Linguistics. I welcome mail from readers. WILFRED LIM: FROM ST. ANDREW'S SCHOOL

Many people have not heard of the expression, No man is an island. They do not think of leaving a heritage. They only live for themselves. Unlike for example... like what you are doing for others through your present MUSIC BLOG. It will be remembered for perpetuity that is when you are long gone... people outside your own family will remember you as the creator of this music blog. Whereas in my case only my immediate family members will, hopefully, remember me from time to time... By comparison your music blog will go on as long as there is music. That's why I was glad you did not let a local organisation take over your music blog when they approached you some years ago. Well done my friend! This blog is your niche. No one can take it away. God Bless you, my brother! Am proud of you!

COMMENT FROM READER:

S. LENG said... "Andy, your blog will be considered a very important account on music of the 60's, especially in Singapore. Its history, the musicians and the bands, the songs they sang, it's all on your blog. Very nostalgic for those who lived through their heydays ad reference material for those after. It is a reminder to the young that their ye-ye, gong-gong, ah-ma and por-por (grandparents) were young once and lived the the era of rock and roll, jazz, rhythm ad blues and danced to 'The Twist' and sang to 'The Young Ones'. Indeed, those were the days, my friend. Today, we often get news of a passing of a local music luminary. Who carries the torch? So please live a long and healthy life, Andy! I wish you 'umor panjang, sehat dan kuat' (long life, healthy and strong). Merely speaking the truth. Your blog is an important document, and I believe it is acknowledged as such. [10.7.22 ]. Hi Andy, It is an achievement to be able to sustain the interest of even 2000 people a month on a regular basis on any given topic. What you have done could not be the result of a faint heart or a lame endeavour. It takes passion and consistency to incessantly create stories that your international readership can relate to and is stimulating enough to make them keep coming back to your blog for more. Your enthusiasm for your work makes the difference! Without it, there would be no zest! Like Coke without the bubbles! Flat! On behalf of all your readers, I wish to appeal to you to not even consider stopping your very fine work but to keep up with your enthusiasm for your unique blog. I am still hopeful that one day soon, the relevant authority in SG would officially recognize your work! It is strange but nonetheless true, no prophet will find acceptance in his own country! A case in point, recently the Australians conferred an award on Matthew Tan for his contributions to Country Music. I am of the view that it is SG that should have taken the initiative for such an award! Of course not only for Matthew but for other iconic local musicians as well, like Henry Chua and others! Be that as it may, here's wishing you continued success in all your efforts to preserve our music heritage! God bless! John Cher.

DANNY KOH: ACCOMPLISHED SINGAPORE PIANIST [LRSM, FLCM]

Hi Andy, I want to reach out and say thank you for the incredible work you are doing. It is so rare and refreshing to find a space like yours—a "Singapore Coffee Shop" for the soul—where the history of our 60s pop scene is preserved with such humility and heart. Even though you mentioned you aren't a "historian," the way you document these stories for us and the younger generation, is a massive service to Singapore’s heritage. Your academic background in Literature and Linguistics clearly shines through in your writing, and the fact that you do this purely as a hobby to encourage community stories is truly inspiring. Over 5 million visits is a testament to how much people value the memories you are keeping alive! Thank you for sharing your "past glory" with us, even if you’re too modest to call it that. Keep the music playing!" CLICK PIX TO READ

I am writing on behalf of www.kopikaki.sg . Kopikaki is a platform for active agers to unite and stay active. BUBBLE GUM MUSIC & THE BAN IN SINGAPORE

Remember bubblegum music from around 1967 to 1972? Or was it bubblegum rock, bubblegum pop, or simply bubblegum. It was a genre of pops with an upbeat sound marketed to appeal to teenagers. Popular groups like 1910 Fruitgum Company, The Ohio Express and The Archies were representative of bubblegum music and the most successful bubblegum song was Sugar, Sugar. Afterwards in 1969 bubble gum singer Tommy Roe came along, sang Dizzy and it became a hit. Bubble gum too was banned in Singapore. JIMMY CHNG [DRUMMER OF DECIBELS SAID: Bubble gum music with their lively and bouncy beat can effectively perk you up whenever you're feeling glum. I believe there was a minister who made a remark in parly probably during the motion to ban the sale of chewing gum here? He likened chewing gummers to cows chewing cud! Incidentally I wonder which type of chewing gum was more popular back then - chewing gum or bubble gum?REMARKS: CLICK PIX TO READ.

EDDY ENG: ENTREPRENEUR

"His (Andy) writing is very much similar to his singing - pure, unadulterated and effortless. Even when singing pop songs he has the discernible air of a scholarly gentleman. You are a singer and writer par excellence. Your writing style is highly readable. It captures the vibrancy of youth in that era where our country was still much in the process of nation-building. Please consider to put it down for posterity in the form of an enduring print. Any scholarly research into the early days of our nationhood is not complete without this cultural dimension - the energy and vigour our youth in musical expression. If I tell you that you are such a fine gentleman, I know I am not the first or last guy to say so. Social grace and decorum are hard to come by in our frenzied society. In this sense, you are almost an extinct breed."

REFLECTING GOOD FRIDAY FROM MS. ELAINE SUNG.

MS. ELAINE SUNG [WRITTEN IN 2019]: " Good Friday took on a new meaning 13 years ago when I became a Christian. The Cross became a symbol of God’s grace poured out for me, a symbol of His love. At the Cross, Jesus Christ paid it all…cliché…but so true. The Cross is also a surety that God’s promises will be fulfilled. Our God and King is victorious and our help in ages past, we need not fear. I had the privilege of sharing God’s Word with friends this week and the Holy Spirit brought to mind that The Cross also meant Rejection, Repentance, and Restoration." CLICK PIX TO READ.

ANDY SINGS 'DIANA' N 'RED RIVER VALLEY' [YOUTUBE] - ORCHID COUNTRY CLUB

Explaining the existence of the RED RIVER VALLEY, both river and song and their origins. This blog has been rejuvenated because of additional information. Also the song Red River Valley has been made popular in Singapore in the 2000's. I have been singing a rock interpretation, one which has never been done before (correct me). Only the country n western one and the rock instrumental have been recorded by many pop artistes. I have since included the song which is on You Tube; it is the song after 'Diana' during our concert at the Orchid Country Club Singapore in 2009. Hope you all enjoy it. In appreciation of the years I spent in Winnipeg, Manitoba, near the Red River Valley. CLICK PIX TO READ N LISTEN.

ADVICE FROM JOHN CHER [SILVER STRINGS DRUMMER]

Dear Friends, Facebook or otherwise. Do visit this blog regularly. Andy Lim updates his blog very regularly and there is always something that would be of interest for those who enjoy reading about the 60s scene in Singapore and abroad. Without any professional help, Andy manages the blog entirely on his own out of sheer passion to record whatever he could of a bygone era in SG's music history. My view is that it is a more than noble task! The number of people in this country who is prepared to do something for nothing is very near to extinction and I am both proud and privileged to have in a meagre way contributed towards this entertaining blog. All the best to you in all your endeavours Andy Lim!

A LETTER FROM AN UNDERGRADUATE - 2013

''Hi Andy, I am an undergraduate student majoring in music teaching, and in the course of my studies, I was introduced to and became interested in Singapore's popular music scene in the 60s. Incidentally, "Freedom", was one of the songs played to us during our lesson. I feel really lucky that I am able read the stories of the people who wrote this song, and no less from the lead singer himself. I must thank both Byrt Mallanyk for writing about his experience and yourself for creating this blog. Sadly, as a Singaporean youth, I too share the sentiments that the valuable experiences and personal histories of the past are under-appreciated today. In fact, it had never occurred to me that Singapore actually had a popular music scene in the 60s before I learnt about them in school. I really appreciate your blog as I enjoy the stories of Singapore's music scene that would have been otherwise left undocumented. To me, the lack of awareness of Singapore's popular culture in the past is a very pertinent issue today. I have so many questions that I would like to ask you, and I'd appreciate it if I could discuss them with you via e-mail. Thank You!'' [14.2.13]

POWER MESSAGE FROM DR JOE PETERS: MUSICOLOGIST (17.04.2017)

JOE PETERS said... Yes, it has been a long time. But I hear about you from various people as I meet them. Essentially, I commute with the region because I assist in various music programmes. Your blog is something that could become a reference point. So all I can do is to strongly encourage you to collate the necessary information and present it from your own point of view. Too many talent and too much hard work in music has gone unnoticed and undocumented in Singapore. I know it is finally happening. I am following your blog for sure! ANDY 60'S MUSIC BLOG COMES TO ITS 12TH YEAR. FROM LIM KUAN MIN.

If you are interested in the history of the 60s music scene in SG, his blog is a must read becos he is able to weave in interesting anecdotes of the historical and social living environment of 60s SG into the music theme of his articles. 60S MUSIC POWER MESSAGES FROM HENRY GAN FROM 'THE TREKKERS' SAYS:

Keep up the interesting stories on your blog. I have to credit your blog which has generated an interest (over 10,000 viewers as of last month ) on the Trekkers YouTube. Not too bad considering that it was of music played over 50 years ago and especially when little was known of the Trekkers. Keep your blog rockin’ Andy Anyway I am still excited whenever I hear music of the Shadows and the Ventures today and especially when it is played by new groups using creative beats and sound effects. I hope I can write a story on these groups for your blog someday. 2.8.18 CLIK PIX TO READ
