BEYOND 22 COMMENTS

The rain this first few days of January 2021 has become the hottest topic for discussion. Yes, and the temperature has fallen to 22C, one of the coolest months since 1934 when it went down to 19.4C, on January 31st. And the January rain in Singapore was torrential, creating road surfaces to break forming potholes.

So it's appropriate to check out the rain songs through the decades. And there are plenty.  So as the rain pelts outside, do check the list below and see how many songs, with the word 'rain' that you are familiar with. It's a short list from 6 decades because there are many such songs. I guess my familiarity with some of the songs have placed them on this list. Whatever, check the lyrics too.

What a perfectly timed post to go with the current weather! I immediately started looking for "raindrops keep falling on my head" as I went down the list, and then rediscovered more and more songs I'd forgotten. So impressive that you didn't miss a single rain song!

A very good list of "rain" songs Andy but my favourite is a 1968 Tony Bennett song "Yesterday I heard the rain" and I play it often by request.

Andy, how about the following 2 popular songs:

1. Don't let the rain come down - The Serendipity Singers (1960s)
2. Have you ever seen the rain - CCR (1970)

Will try to recall other songs if my memory helps. Hahaha !

Thanks again Cedric for being a part of my music life.
I am most grateful to you for being so generous in your gift of songs.
Love Tony Bennett but didn't know he has a rain song in his repertoire.
Will check out the song immediately.
Yes, yesterday I heard the rain, for half an hour or so.

Hello FL,
DON'T LET THE RAIN COME DOWN - SERENDIPITY SINGERS.
Now again, that's another song I'm not familiar with.
Thanks very much.
Will also check it out and I might replace another YouTube song with your song and Bennett's.

I checked, CCR is on the list.
Again kamsiah, FL.
You, like my other regular readers, are treasures on this blog.

Hey Mike, thanks for your choice of rain songs. Yes, 1969 when the music soldiers came marching in, solid and strong.

1969 was the year I became an adult and stopped being a teenager and what a baptism into the new era of pop music culture that took the world by storm. One song by Bryan Adams that is still rocking good is Summer of 69.

I hear the drizzle of the rain
Like a memory it falls
Soft and warm continuing
Tapping on my roof and walls
And from the shelter of my mind
Through the window of my eyes
I gaze beyond the rain-drenched streets
To England where my heart lies...

And as I watch the drops of rain
Weave their weary paths and die
I know that I am like the rain
There but for the grace of you go I

SEPTEMBER IN THE RAIN:

Also recorded by Shearing, Russ Hamilton and so many others, September In The Rain (1937), is another personal favourite. His repertoire of songs would definitely have been played in the dance cabarets of the Great World, Happy (Gay) World and New World amusement parks in Singapore in the late 50s and 60s in Singapore.

We may not realise it at first. But a song can be telling a true story and all the emotions of a particular moment in time. Like CCR's 'Have You Ever Seen The Rain " released in 1971.Band member John Fogerty was very troubled and sad that his brother Tom Fogerty was leaving the band while they were at the pinnacle of their success. John wrote the song using allegorical images not about real rain and sun...but expressing his utter sadness within his soul. I love this song

James Kwok
On the topic of rain, I won’t
forget this poem which was
among many others which
(back in 1958) my P5 teacher
Mr Allan Gwynne made us
recite, and for which I won
a little book prize.

Rain In Summer
by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

How beautiful is the rain!
After the dust and heat,
In the broad and fiery street,
In the narrow lane,
How beautiful is the rain!
How it clatters along the roofs,
Like the tramp of hoofs!
How it gushes and struggles out
From the throat of the over-flowing spout!
Across the window pane
It pours and pours;
And swift and side,
With a muddy tide,
Like a river down the gutter roars
The rain, the welcome rain!

Roland Chua
James Kwok I remember this poem too!

Yip Dick
Well done James, and I remember Allen Gwynne too though he did not teach my class. He looked like a poet.😍🤟🤞🤟

James Kwok
Yip Dick Interestingly, Allen Gwynne taught me in my primary school (Rayman) and later we met up in Victoria, where he did not teach my class, but got me to round up the 7 Rayman-Victoria boys for lunch at his big house at 67 Merryn Road where he lived with his sister Phyllis. Yes, he looked like a poet.
