The Diplomatic Coup

It is a diplomatic coup and it only took a little child to sing a popular melody, which is already a pop folk classic.

When President Donald Trump welcomed President Xi Jinping to the US for their first meet in April 2017, the powerful pair, together with their wives and Mr Trump's family, were entertained to a rendition of Moh Li Hua (茉莉花)  , a Chinese classic that dates back to the 18th Century.

Already with the poise and personality of her famous mother, five year old Arabella Kushner,  Ivanka Trump's daughter, serenaded the group with more tact and gracefulness that her grand dad could ever do with his Twitter quips.

The Song

Mo Li Hua or Jasmine Flower, another favourite song of my mother's (where I learnt most of my Chinese songs from) has been on the Chinese Hit Parade list for decades and known not only in China but all over the world. 

Covered by many artistes internationally, the song carried its worth when Westerners heard it as part of Pucini's famous opera, Turandot (1928), covered by Kenny G, loved by Jiang Zemin and has been performed in many opening ceremonies including the Beijing Summer Olympics in 2008. 

Lately Celine Dione learnt to sing it and there are many recordings both on You Tube, on ring tones, mp3s, CD's and other media.

A historic moment don't you think? A Chinese folk classic sung by a little American girl during the first meet of two great country heads.

Donald Trump & Kim Jong Un In Vietnam February 2019 Songs To Remember

Whether this second summit between President Trump (USA) and Mr Kim (PRNK) will bring about a successful bid to a complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation is still unclear. 

What is clear during this meeting is the venue. Vietnam reminds many pop song enthusiasts the music that made the charts in the 60s and 70s during the infamous War.

My family and I were in Danang for a holiday last Summer 2018 and we visited the beach where the American troops landed in March, 1965. Put these two pieces of information together and the number of pop songs on the topic is a nuclear blast.

Donald Trump Honours Elvis Presley With Medal Of Freedom

Mr Donald Trump, President of the United States, honoured Elvis Presley, King of Rock and Roll with a posthumous Presidential Medal of Freedom on 16 November 2018 at the White House. It is the highest honour given to a civilian of the US.

Accordingly the 60's icon, "defined American culture to billions of adoring fans around the world. Elvis fused gospel, country and rhythm n blues to create a sound all his own selling more than a billion records."  Six other recipients were also awarded the Medal.

Turning back the clock, Mr Trumped recalled an Elvis concert he attended, where members of the audience and fans were screaming and going crazy, ripping the hall apart. To appease the crowd, the usual announcement was made for most Elvis shows, "Elvis has left the building." 

Instead, Mr Trump misquoted saying, "Elvis has left the house."

He was clearly in a happy mood. He described Elvis as legendary and the popular Grammy awarded gospel How Great Thou Art was played for a moment.

Congratulations, Mr Trump. One of the best moves that you made. I can hear Elvis fans screaming now. 

And Elvis. The medal has been reserved for you, a long time ago. The question was, who's going to give it away.👍

Mr Najib Razak Sings Pop 60's Music

It's been circulating on WhatsApp:

When Mr Najib Razak was still around as Prime Minister he loved to sing pop music from the 1960's. One of his favourite songs is The Young Ones, the famous hit by Cliff Richard and a test item for all would-be Singapore Cliff Richard contestants. Like the Shadows instrumental Apache, this Cliff favourite has been performed a million times by many 60's music fans. 

So here's the former Malaysian PM rockin' n rollin' in top form. He's really got the beat. With him being so famous, he could easily make it as a pop singer.  

The full keyboard backup with percussion is fantastic and Mr Najib's diction and timing are perfect. Man, he's really good. I'm sure The Silver Strings would take him on. Audie Ng, here's a good catch.

Donald Trump n Kim Jong Un Singapore Summit 2018

A *tongue-in-cheek composite picture of the Great Leaders meeting @ Peace Centre Singapore.

Mr Donald Trump is coming to Singapore on 12 June to meet up with North Korea's Mr Kim Jong Un for a first get together and, as the newspapers say, it would be a historical summit moment.

There's a suggestion by many observers and WhatsApp enthusiasts that the two Great Leaders could meet at Peace Centre (image above) in Singapore that memorable day. Of course, it's *tongue in cheek.

But it's one big tick for our small dot since we even have a Peace Centre in place many years ago for such occasions.

So here's welcoming them to this sunny, peace-loving and properly secured island and hoping negotiations will go well for a more peaceful and stable world.

  *😉Tongue in cheek: Peace Centre is a small retail mall and is unlikely to hold an international conference of such magnitude. The two will meet in one of the exquisitely beautiful hotels or corporate buildings, all well-equipped for such an occasion.

This post discusses the music favourites of both Mr Trump and Mr Kim.

Mr Kim:
I shall dwell on Mr Kim's music interest.  He has some pop favourites but there is not much information about them. One particular choice of his is Brother Louie (image) by Germany's electro-pop stars Modern Talking. 

It was a 1986 January hit song in the country and Sweden. Re-released in 1998, it became tops in France and Austria too.  Way back when in 1973, Hot Chocolate made this song famous and had been covered by Code Red and megastar Bon Jovi.

According to a few websites, he is keen on art rock records, Euro-pops and North Korean Girl Bands? Certainly uncertain. Of course, everyone knows he has a deep understanding of  Dennis Rodman, a retired American professional basketball player.

Lately, USA Today, in its news report about Mr Kim (3 April 2018), stated that he adores K-Pop music and was "deeply moved" after watching a two-hour South Korean concert at Pyongyang. 

He showed much interest in the performance and asked questions about the songs and lyrics.  For action films, Mr Kim loves James Bond movies and kung-fu flick Hong Kong star Jackie Chan.

I read recently that he likes a song by Elvis Presley's favourite composers Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller (e.g. Hound Dog, Jailhouse Rock). It was a Peggy Lee big 1969 hit, Is That All There Is? (Video above). The question seems to fit Mr Trump's profile?

Mr Donald Trump's 'Hombre' Triggers Nostalgia

President Trump's Tweets:

Mr Donald Trump's presence as POTUS, his regular, interesting but controversial Tweets and his recent use of the word hombre has jolted my memory to yesteryear when I used to patronise the Capitol Cinema at North Bridge Road to watch what was known as Western movies. 

It was a common practice for Singapore movie goers to patronise the cinemas and watch these films on the wide screen during the fifties and sixties. With themes of conflict, gun slingers galore and stereo-types in these Cowboy movies, the genre was popular culture then. And who can forget John Wayne.

Movie Nostalgia:

Why has my memory gone back to these Westerns? Since trailing the US presidential campaign city to city last year on Cable TV, and listening to President Trump's controversial Mexican Wall speeches, my mind went reverse mode and I started remembering movie titles like: Man From Laramie, The Kentuckian, Oklahoma, Wichita, Sante Fe Passage, The Oregon Trail, The Man From Gavelston and Cimarron. 

Then there was: The Treasure of Pancho Villa, Commanche, Gunfight At The OK Corral, Rio Bravo, Cheyenne Autumn, The Treasures of Sierra Madre and Viva Zapata among others.

These movies drew crowds in the 50's and 60's, remembering that those were post-war years, and there was hardly any entertainment then. 

Vocabulary Nostalgia:

As a child, and to my mother's anguish, I learnt many American cowpoke terms that had migrated from Mexico. In order to understand the movie dialogues, I needed to understand these loan words, now established and official.

The vocabulary included:  buckaroo, corral, desperado, lariat, lasso, ranch, stampede, rodeo, sierra, bronco, mustang, fiesta, coyote, puma, burrito, sombrero, rumba, tango and of course hombre.

So Mr Trump's term about bad hombres takes me back to the typical cowboy movie scene in a saloon (bar) when the Sheriff tells the gunslinger, "You're bad, hombre. Get on your saddle and vamoose. This is my town!" I would kick the hombre out too if he were a drug dealer or criminal. 

Then I remember Westerns where the cowboys were always at war with native Indians (previous bias name: Red Indian or Injuns) from the Apache, Blackfoot, Cherokee, Comanche, Cheyenne, Mohican and other tribes, depending on the fancy of the movie directors, plot or country setting.  

The same cowboy scene on screen sometimes shows the native Indian Chief with his flaming head-dress saying to the soldier, "White man talk with forked tongue; white man die." Now it's a standing joke in many cartoons.

Chuck Berry Video shows Presley copied his moves, for sure.

 Pop Music Nostalgia:

The campaign trail, while watching Anderson Cooper going through US country names on CNN, switched my mind to songs like, Galveston, El Paso, The Streets of Laredo, Blue Moon of Kentucky, The Ballad of the Alamo, North to Alaska.

I could remember, The Yellow Rose of Texas, San Antonio Rose, Yellow Rose of Texas, Battle of New Orleans, Colorado Trail, Wichita Lineman and By The Time I Get To Phoenix.

A song I knew well was Chuck Berry's, Back In The USA  where he named cities and towns (You Tube above) in rapid fire. Here goes: Detroit, Chicago, Chattanooga, Baton Rouge, St. Louis, California and Delaware.

Now the reader may understand why our Singaporean boys and girls from the sixties recorded songs of such a nature. The influence from the US was tremendous.

Donald Trump's Wall And 'South Of The Border' Song

Songs I Love:

I've always loved the song, South of The Border (Jimmy Kennedy n Michael Carr) and learnt it as a child from radio broadcast.  The Latin beat with its array of percussion sounds has always been the magnetic factor.  The song from 1939 (I wasn't even born) became very popular early in the 1940's and remains a hit till today.

Strange that it is actually a Country and Western song from a movie, sung by our Hollywood cowboy, Gene Autry, one of the earliest silver screen wild-west stars. Because of its popularity the number has been recorded by dozens of artistes from the 50's.

These names include: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Perry Como, Bing Crosby, Guy Lombardo, Willie Nelson, Sim Whitman, Marty Robbins, Engelbert Humperdinck, Sam Cooke, Patsy Cline, Robbie Williams, Fats Domino,  Slim Whitman, Chuck Berry, Don McLean, Frankie Laine, Chris Isaak and and many more. That's how popular the song was across countries.

The instrumental version has the 50 Guitars of Tommy Garrett, orchestras of Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Nelson Riddle, Ray Coniff, Max Greger, Geoff Love, Country Minstrel and Bobby Ferres. 

Then there's: Herb Alpert and His Tijuana Brass, Pablo Roterro and His Mexican Brass Boys (above) and other percussion bands. Even The Shadows and Jumping Jewels are in the game. For me I love The Jumping Jewels' version and Blue Diamonds rendition.

So depending on who sings the song and which band is playing the music, the tempo changes accordingly.
                                               
In Singapore night clubs and dance floors during the 50's, the song became a hit when patrons danced to its rousing Latin-American beat, usually a rhumba, sometimes a cha-cha and mostly a mambo. 

But when a crooner goes to the microphone to sing it, the rhythm changes accordingly and dancers glide on the floor.  Our boys and girls from the 60's guitar twanging time, love The Shadows version: 3 guitars and drums. Clean and neat. U.K. original.

Don't forget New Orleans. When Frank Sinatra recorded it, the song took on a jazzy, city beat feel. Willie Nelson like Chris Isaak gives it the strumming guitar, country like atmosphere. Just listen to Sam Cooke's above. Different again. Yes, it's soul man! Chicago Blues?

Now here's the reason why I feature this song. The dynamics are simple. A C/W song is also a Mexican rumba hit. And Mr Trump wants to build a wall along the Mexican border. How does one severe a psychological connection physically in one fell swoop?

How do you separate the United States of America from Latin-America? Even the songs the countries sing have the same roots. A strumming cowboy groovy guitar gravitates to a Mexican, mambo, maracas melody.  

Evolution of song, South of The Border. Smooth and easy, without transition:

South of the Border is only one song from hundreds of Latino hits that had found its way across to Mexico from the US. And vice-versa.  Now isn't that free trade where everybody wins?

It is not  a surprise that a number of pop singers may not want to perform at Donald Trump's Inauguration as the 45th President of the U.S. but it is shocking that there are so many artistes who refused the offer.

Here is the list gathered from newspapers, magazines and the internet of artistes from the 1960's onward who will probably not appear:

"Let's see how big the cheque is," he was quoted as saying and with much honesty that is in the gentleman. Rick-rollin' expert Rick Astley added that an American President's inauguration wasn't the right place for a British artiste to be.

Another big name, Paul Anka, who had been asked by Mr Trump personally, could not re-schedule himself for the big night because of personal commitment but it would have been wonderful to hear Anka sing, My Way during the ceremony.

There are some other artistes who will not be appearing but I am not familiar with them. Knowing Mr Donald J. Trump, he may have a few trump cards up his sleeves, so let's wait and see. There are still four days more. He may come up with his Four Aces.

Hmm, just wondering if Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Michael Jackson, James Brown, David Bowie and Debbie Reynolds, etc. had been around, would they?

What about you? Would you, as a band or a solo singer and musician, perform for Donald Trump? Why not? Why isn't everyone giving him a chance? After all it's just entertainment for the night. You are not endorsing his political gymnastics.

Elvis Meets Trump and Clinton @ Las Vegas

Would be great if Elvis Presley could meet Mr Donald Trump and Mrs Hillary Clinton tomorrow morning (Singapore time) when the two presidential candidates converged at Las Vegas for their third and final debate.

Well it all started when Elvis wanted to meet President Nixon cause the King had something he needed from the President? On the red-eye to Washington, Elvis scribbled a letter to President Nixon. 

"Sir, I can and will be of any service that I can to help the country out," he wrote. All he wanted in return was a federal agent's badge. 

"I would love to meet you," he added. They did and became best of friends. So the proof is the above image 1.

He was so encouraged by Mr Nixon's friendliness that he thought he might just visit Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton before both went on stage for their final debate at Las Vegas.

So this morning, he flew all the way, in his private jet, from Washington D.C. to Las Vegas where the great debate was to be held at the University of Nevada. He was lucky again and instead of meeting one, he met two Trumps. It was Elvis' big evening. Imagine meeting two of them at one go. Image 2 shows Elvis with his moon-glasses, trying to take a photo with the two Mr Trump. 

When Elvis was asked his feelings after meeting The Donald, he said, "I'd love to change my hairstyle. Be like his. Oooh, man! Must play jackpot. Imagine, instead of getting one trump card I got two. And in Vegas. I'm all shook up."

"Viva Las Vegas!" he shouted. "Now if only I can find Hillary." He managed to catch her outside the dressing room. She was her usual happy mood as Elvis chatted with her (image 3). Henri Gann's good friend and also Elvis' main lead guitarist, Scotty Moore managed to take their picture.

So there you are folks. These are real photographs, taken before the Clinton versus Trump final debate at Las Vegas.

This article is written in jest. The idea came about because of the debate venue. Las Vegas has always been associated with Elvis Presley and his hit Viva Las Vegas. The fact that he met Nixon in 1970 started the spin-off in my mind, why not a story about him meeting the 2016 presidential hopefuls.
