First Of May - A Day of Reprieve for Labour - by Wen Hing

''Bringing back bitter sweet memories'', says Wen Hing; this handsome gentleman writes so well and so quickly, I had to put up his comment about a previous posting [connection below] for everyone to read. And he wrote it only this morning. I know now your memories are so much sweeter.
Many thanks Wen Hing...

''This is the album which helped me survive my adolescence... when Melody Fair painted a romantic and innocence in love, and how my life was really taking place In The Morning, and of course; how First Of May helped me to realise I’ve grown, lamenting about the time “when I was small, and Christmas trees were small..”, although I’d never really seen a Christmas tree before.

That made the whole idea so magical, and and in my youthful hunger for acceptance and understanding I also wrote a song entitled “First of May”, for a misplaced relationship. So this album and in particular this song brings back real bittersweet memories.

These days I rather think of this day as the 1st Day of May.... if that can somehow dull the senses somewhat. But it is what it is, and this is a day of reprieve for labor, both menial and emotional. Happy Labor Day!''

I was a teenager when I first heard this song and I remember it made me feel quite sad. Loved listening to it although it would feel melancholic afterwards.

One of the many BG's songs in my favourite list.

The wonder of this song...
It has different connotations for different people,
eg puppy love, misplaced relationship, lost love, etc.

Well written from views and memories to his adolescent age inspiration from 1st of May.

BEE GEES
Who could have thought this song be so iconic... comes yearly in May.
Great lyrics and good on WEN HING.

Thank you all for the comments and support for WEN HING's MAY 1st [BEEGEES] nostalgia piece.

I met WEN HING [WAYNE CHOW] during a concert when we sang on the same stage at RELC INTERNATIONAL HOTEL around Orchard Road, accompanied by the famous SG pianist, JIMMY CHAN.

He was good. Great voice, bi-lingual, a good-looker and patient. WEN HING is also a composer of pop songs, yes, but MEANINGFUL ones. Not the rubbish we hear today.

Check him out on his other article where a few of his songs from YouTube have been posted. Thank you WEN HING.

The Bee Gees were poets and storytellers who put it to music. Like When Hing writes the memories of the time gone by and the memories associated with that time are our solace when the song is played or the date of the memory arrives. Let us relive the moment and say "that was our growing up years".

Congrats to you Wayne on your First of May article in Andy60smusic.
Bee Gees are also one of my favourite bands. Always appreciate this album by Genevieve, wife of Perry Koh. There are 3 Bee Gees hits here - Words, First of May and I Started a Joke.

Thanks for sharing Wen Hing! Beautifully written! A masterpiece! I was fortunate to have watched The Brothers Gibb sang it live in 1972 at the now defunct Singapore National Theatre during The Bee Gees “Spectacular Tour”.

Thank you Brother Andy for posting! Happy May Day Everyone 👍❤️🥰…

I talked about the Bee Gees song and the film with my very old friend yesterday. He said he would never forget the day he went and saw it, even said every scene set down in his brain. He said what he recalls most about the movie is the last scene when Mark Lester and Tracy Hyde were running away with a trolley. Me? sorry I didn't watch the film but I wonder if I could appreciate it that way.

Andy Young
Hiroshi Deguchi THANKS. You write with much feel and description. And your phrases make your expression tell much, without telling a lot. A writer indeed. CHEERS.
