Our Singapore National Day Parade (NDP) 2026 has a three-track thematic album that includes, 'Go Beyond' rather than one main anthem. So officially the track includes 'Sparkle' by Gareth Fernandez and Dru Chen, 'You'll Be Okay' by Jasmine Sokko, and 'Giants' by Iman Fandi and weish.

Always so positive, always so honest, here's a music and home maker I met at a media site a few years ago. Readers can check Hiroshi-san's other postings on this blog by clicking his name under LABELS below the article.

Hiroshi Deguchi From Japan says:

"I became interested in Singapore when I happened to visit there for the first time in 1981. So attracted by Singaporeans that I had been eager to learn anything Singaporean and national songs, too. 

When I first heard the song. I thought it a little too intrusive. I would have hated it if our government had done the same. We should not have been pushed, I thought. But soon I started to think those songs were necessary for people who have different ideas and origins like Singapore to become one. 

I was there every summer in August, a week or so after the National Day Parade, so those National songs infiltrated me. I learned them by heart. It is not easy for me to say which song I like the best but 'Stand Up For Singapore' is one of the best surely."

Majulah Singapura: Ramli Sarip & Six Anthems Before

So here it is Majulah Singapura with a different feel by Ramli Sarip.

Singapore went through quite a number of national anthems before Majulah Singapura (composed by the late Che Zubir Said). We sang God Save The King, then Kimigayo, God Save The Queen and Negara Ku before our independence in 1965. That's four national anthems. 

But wait a minute. During colonial days, the Chinese students sang Sun-Min Zhu Yi (三民主义), refusing to follow the British and following Nationalist China's anthem instead. So that's five anthems that some Singaporeans had to sing.

The Indian National Army which had its headquarters in Singapore during the Japanese occupation had their own anthem too. And they sang it in Hindi. So if this anthem is included, our citizens would have sung six anthems before our present original one.

Now that's a lot of anthems for a tiny dot like Singapore.

So sing on Mr. Rock Star, Ramli. And it's our own anthem we all sing today and it's made in Singapore too.  According to Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen, Ramli was: "Raw, gritty and visceral – it’s soul-stirring to hear, even moving some in the audience during the rehearsals to tears."

What's fun for this year's National Day Parade is that it will be held at the Padang but a different spectacle altogether from the 60s, where Singapore was dark and dreary when we first held it there.

Today the former Supreme Court building (opposite the Padang)  stands taller because it houses the National Art Gallery, where I go with my grandchildren to participate in the Gallery's many activities. Facing this massive building, Parliament House is on the left and St Andrew's Cathedral on the right. 

It costs a bomb to park at the House but it's worth the while. Spending time with the grandchildren in air-conditioned comfort amidst paintings hung on cool walls. Hey, where can you get this atmosphere in South East Asia? 

Inside the National Art Gallery with rooms for children to dabble in the arts, literally.

On the right of the Gallery stands St Andrew's Cathedral. This building symbolizes the good faith of the people who built it.  Many times we have been there to give thanks. 

"Hearts in plenty we shall meet."*

The Padang is surrounded by historical buildings and most have been renovated and refurbished. A recent trip to the Victoria Theatre (behind Parliament), to watch a lady violinist, with compliments from Nora Tann, held us in awe when we saw the New Vic. And so the blessings come...

The new Vic. has provided a stage for Singapore and international artistes to perform. The huge musical organ within is one of its kind in SEAsia.

Just be grateful for what is SG today. Give credit, where credit is due.

I'm glad that a member of my kin will be experiencing her first NDP because she's in P5.
