Challenge:

"Can you GLISH a National Day song?"

"What?"

Had a bit of a chat with John Klass, the man behind the current GOLD 90.5 fm Home Stretch segment from 5pm to 8pm.

When I heard, a few evenings ago during dinner, that if I could hum a National Day song, I could win a prize. I am always in for any fun. I called up the station immediately. And, of course, Mr. Class [Klass] himself answered.

The challenge was not to hum the SG song but to glish it [that's the second syllable of Singlish]. So I did. Didn't remember the title but he helped me complete the song when we both did a harmonising duet. And we went, "Glish, glish, glish, glish, glish..."😍. Could be, Count On Me Singapore?

And I won a $120 prize; oh well! Probably in pillows, bolsters and bedsheets. What an evening!

BUBBLE GUM MUSIC & THE BAN IN SINGAPORE

Remember bubblegum music from around 1967 to 1972? Or was it bubblegum rock, bubblegum pop, or simply bubblegum. It was a genre of pops with an upbeat sound marketed to appeal to teenagers. Popular groups like 1910 Fruitgum Company, The Ohio Express and The Archies were representative of bubblegum music and the most successful bubblegum song was Sugar, Sugar. Afterwards in 1969 bubble gum singer Tommy Roe came along, sang Dizzy and it became a hit. Bubble gum too was banned in Singapore. JIMMY CHNG [DRUMMER OF DECIBELS SAID: Bubble gum music with their lively and bouncy beat can effectively perk you up whenever you're feeling glum. I believe there was a minister who made a remark in parly probably during the motion to ban the sale of chewing gum here? He likened chewing gummers to cows chewing cud! Explaining the existence of the RED RIVER VALLEY, both river and song and their origins. This blog has been rejuvenated because of additional information. Also the song Red River Valley has been made popular in Singapore in the 2000's. I have been singing a rock interpretation, one which has never been done before (correct me). Only the country n western one and the rock instrumental have been recorded by many pop artistes. I have since included the song which is on You Tube; it is the song after 'Diana' during our concert at the Orchid Country Club Singapore in 2009. Hope you all enjoy it.
