Russia World Cup 2018: Inspires Soccer Stories, Chants

2018 FIFA World Cup Russia is on and millions of soccer fans will be following the games at the various stadiums in Russia, on their television sets, smartphones or even the radio.

Soccer chants today are just as creative as they were some years ago. When Russsian players were reprimanded recently for verbal abuse using soccer chants against France's soccer team, it is not something new. Chants have been used since football existed.

For the past 8 years, this blog has been telling soccer stories and soccer chants that these tournaments have produced. Abusive or encouraging, soccer chants are here to stay. Below are the connections for such stories.

I was interested to read Guru Happy's contribution to the debate and I wonder if he ever played football with Sergeant Jeffrey in the RAF Changi team? I worked with Jeff at HQFEAF during 1963-64.

I still have a group photo of our Unit in the RAF Police, and some other photos, taken sometime in 1965 though.

We might have played together during that time?

Soccer? Football? The Beautiful game? Bah! Humbug!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A bunch of overpaid prima donnas with the pain threshold of an exposed nerve. They trip on a blade of grass and lie there, writhing and groaning like spoilt brats. Compare them with most other sportsmen who dust themselves down and play on. Especially jump jockeys who sometimes have horrific falls and suffer very painful injuries but are back in the saddle for the next race.; 16.6.18

BUBBLE GUM MUSIC & THE BAN IN SINGAPORE

Remember bubblegum music from around 1967 to 1972? Or was it bubblegum rock, bubblegum pop, or simply bubblegum. It was a genre of pops with an upbeat sound marketed to appeal to teenagers. Popular groups like 1910 Fruitgum Company, The Ohio Express and The Archies were representative of bubblegum music and the most successful bubblegum song was Sugar, Sugar. Afterwards in 1969 bubble gum singer Tommy Roe came along, sang Dizzy and it became a hit. Bubble gum too was banned in Singapore. JIMMY CHNG [DRUMMER OF DECIBELS SAID: Bubble gum music with their lively and bouncy beat can effectively perk you up whenever you're feeling glum. I believe there was a minister who made a remark in parly probably during the motion to ban the sale of chewing gum here? He likened chewing gummers to cows chewing cud! Also the song Red River Valley has been made popular in Singapore in the 2000's. I have been singing a rock interpretation, one which has never been done before (correct me). Only the country n western one and the rock instrumental have been recorded by many pop artistes. I have since included the song which is on You Tube; it is the song after 'Diana' during our concert at the Orchid Country Club Singapore in 2009. Hope you all enjoy it.
