When Carols Became A Beacon

Hey Andy,

Your posting on 'trees' comes timely to help me keep my word to think about a Christmas write. I think of:

O Tannenbaum (O Christmas Tree) is a German Christmas song. Based on a traditional folk song, it became associated with the Christmas tree by the early 20th century and sung as a Christmas carol.

Boney M's version sets the mood for the season. This group sings my favourite carols: Joy To The World; The First Noel; The Little Drummer Boy, with such soul that they truly lift up one's spirit.

Reason For This Season

For a believer, the reason for this season is the Lord Jesus Christ. As a child in a mission school, I learnt to sing, Jesus loves me, this I know for the Bible tells me so; What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear.... The lyrics didn't leave much impression on me then... just enjoyed the tuneful melody.

It is only these last 27 years that I look back and realise it is truly an Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound that saved a child like me...And to think that this was written by an ex-slave trader.

Thanks for posting Brother Andy. I was fortunate to have watched iconic diva Liz Mitchell and Boney M twice in Singapore. Been a huge fan for more than four decades and their songs makes me reminisce about my youth and much happier times.

Listening to this album send me back to nicer times when I was at their Christmas Special Show down in Orchard Road, and I got the privilege to chat with Liz and hubby before the show commences. I thank her for the years of fantastic music and oh, what a great concert Liz and Boney M gave.

Apart from lots of Christmas songs, we also got to hear a medley of hits comprising of Rivers Of Babylon, Rasputin, Daddy Cool and Sunny. An evening of nostalgia.. Liz Mitchell shines in bringing back the good old times.

BUBBLE GUM MUSIC & THE BAN IN SINGAPORE

Remember bubblegum music from around 1967 to 1972? Or was it bubblegum rock, bubblegum pop, or simply bubblegum. It was a genre of pops with an upbeat sound marketed to appeal to teenagers. Popular groups like 1910 Fruitgum Company, The Ohio Express and The Archies were representative of bubblegum music and the most successful bubblegum song was Sugar, Sugar. Afterwards in 1969 bubble gum singer Tommy Roe came along, sang Dizzy and it became a hit. Bubble gum too was banned in Singapore. JIMMY CHNG [DRUMMER OF DECIBELS SAID: Bubble gum music with their lively and bouncy beat can effectively perk you up whenever you're feeling glum. I believe there was a minister who made a remark in parly probably during the motion to ban the sale of chewing gum here? He likened chewing gummers to cows chewing cud! Explaining the existence of the RED RIVER VALLEY, both river and song and their origins. This blog has been rejuvenated because of additional information. Also the song Red River Valley has been made popular in Singapore in the 2000's. I have been singing a rock interpretation, one which has never been done before (correct me). Only the country n western one and the rock instrumental have been recorded by many pop artistes. I have since included the song which is on You Tube; it is the song after 'Diana' during our concert at the Orchid Country Club Singapore in 2009. Hope you all enjoy it.
