Here are some very good musician friends from the 60's and 70's who made a name for themselves, even up to the 80's and 90's in Singapore.

I am highlighting a few whom I know personally and still keeping in touch with. Thanks guys for accompanying me and entertaining us these so many years. Have a jolly Hari Raya Puasa.

Danny Boy, actually Mohd. Khan from 

'The Silver Strings' who later stormed 'The Thunderbirds' 

with his quick lightning sticks on the drum-set.

Mohd. Jalani, the piano connoisseur who amazes with his

keyboard capers. He entertained at top hotels in Singapore.

Jovial but patient, Jalani is indeed a good friend.

We were friends since youth, Paul Ibrahm was 

singing and playing with me and The Velvetones but 

later performed with many top bands in Singapore.

Freda Hanum, Rose Kassim, Rumini Ra’oef and Anna Law

are The Teepees and conquered all nightclub territories

in Singapore and internationally. One of the best girl bands ever.

A good friend indeed, the late Abdulah Yusof Nawawi or Bobo, 

was not only a great guitarist but was an entertainer on stage, 

jumping and prancing with his fabulous antics.

Singapore's Latin Duo: Bobo And Ally At The Expo

Well here they are ladies and gentlemen, two of the best Singapore strollers I have seen since my days in Paris, France. Elder brother Ally (right image) and Bobo (who plays lead and rhythm with The Silver Strings) are seen here at the Singapore Exposition (2011) hallways performing Latin hits from the 60's with only an acoustic guitar each. They were performing, Fly Me To The Moon and Quizas, Quizas, Quizas.

The music and vocals are excellent, definitely professional. Los Bobos, as they are called, played for two hours each day during lunch. Pity you missed them because they are a fantastic duo, playing a great number of current music too. The Los Bobos are not buskers but stroll at nightspots around Singapore entertaining moonlight revellers.

Article was written after Bobo's death:

Bobo, one half of the duo, had since passed away on 3rd January, 2015.  For a number of concerts  in Singapore, he had accompanied me on stage when I sang, Mean Woman Blues, Red River Rock and Diana. 

Bobo had, what some Singaporean musicians lack, versatility on stage. Bobo did the opposite. He could strum, sing, dance around and had such a wide repertoire that he entertained the audiences who had seen him performed.

During his performance at The Silver Strings concert he explained to me in the car (as I was taking him home), how tired he felt that night. But because of his love for music and the guitar he managed to carry on till the end of the show. He passed away five months later after having been hospitalised for a while.

God bless you Bobo. You were a good, sincere and generous person.  May you rest in peace.

Heavy Metal/Latino Guitar - 60s Music - The Late BOBO or Abdulah Yusof Nawawi.

Heavy metal, Latino or rock, the late Bobo was always there to lead an instrumental number, accompany his singers and pleased his audiences in Singapore. Still in the music circuit, Bobo had been playing with his own group, Los Bobos (earlier posting on this blog), for many years.

Not only did he play a mean lead guitar, he was also great as a rhythmist and entertained his audiences with cute antics on stage; he was alive and was loved for his performances. 

Bobo, whose real name is Abdulah Yusof Nawawi, was once with The Neu Faces or Muka Baru. They did an LP, Muka Baru, which featured the sound of a motor-cycle and Bobo had brought his own bike to the studio to record the sound of its engine.

Four of the tracks on the album had lyrics and music by Bobo. They are Hari Minggu, Gadis Manis, Joget Jual Beli and of course, Motor with original sound effects. (From: To Be A Rock But Not To Roll/Jerry Fernandez, July 2009, Douglas Gomez/Comdesign Associates.)

Bobo accompanied me with The Silver Strings on some occasions, namely, at the Esplanade, the Orchid Country Club and at the RELC International Hotel near Orchard Road.

Mexico To Singapore - Los Bobos - 60s Music

LOS BOBOS is renowned for its extensive repertoire and vast experience. This strolling trio comprises Bobo on keyboards (right) and lead guitar, Ally on bass and Vivian on lead vocals and rhythm guitar.
