Andy,

By now I guess you must have heard the news on the passing of Don Everly. I did not know that Phil Everly had passed away about 7 years ago.

My tribute to the Everly Brothers

In late 50s: listening to 'Wake Up Little Susie' and 'Bye, Bye Love' with a windup gramophone player at a beach picnic in Changi.

In the 60s: hearing stereo music high fidelity for the first time and captivated by the sound separation of the Everly Bros hits of 'Walk Right Back', 'Take a Message to Mary', 'So Sad', 'All I Have To Do is Dream', 'Bird Dog', 'Cathy's Clown', 'Til' I Kissed You', 'Let it Be Me' and 'Devoted to You'. Singapore 60s music fans will remember the Blue Diamonds singing many of the Everly Bros tunes in addition to their own hit 'Ramona'.

By the 80s: While listening to their latest hit of 'Wings of Nightingale' on my McKintosh, I had discovered the full bodied sweet sound of tube amplifiers. For the first time, I felt like I was in a recording studio while listening to my records.

Also in the 80s, I was fortunate to see the Everly Brothers performed at the Greek Theater and Hollywood Palladium. Seeing how natural they were on stage and hearing them sing in "perfect harmony" still intrigued me to this day.

Don Everly - RIP

Don Everly died at age 84 in his home in Nashville, Tennessee and Phil Everly passed away in 2014 at age 74 in Los Angeles, California. Simon and Garfunkel and the Beatles attributed the Everly Bros to be their major influence in music. Jerry Lee Lewis said it best when he described the Everly Bros music as an "integral fabric of American pop music."

In 1986, the Everly Brothers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2001, they were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Interesting Comments from Paul McCartney and Paul Simon:

Paul McCartney - “When John and I first started to write songs, I was Phil and he was Don."

Paul Simon -" I was completely star-struck and extremely impressed by their humility and gentleness of soul" when I finally met the Everly Bros years later.

(Bob Greene of CNN, Jan 12, 2014)

Now back to my Spotify and listening to the Everly Brothers and their hits of the 60s!

Thank You Andy!
Soooo Sad...

Everly Bros had 35 Billboard Top 100 singles during their musical career –the record for any duo. They enjoyed great success with 29 of their singles charting in the top 40 and a number of their hits were interpretations written by other songwriters, Don penned some of their most popular songs with (Till) I Kissed You, So Sad (To Watch Good Love Go Bad), Cathy's Clown and wrote Gone, Gone Gone with his brother .

Their 60s signature flattop black Gibson J-200 guitar with star-shaped inlays was also a favorite guitar for Bob Dylan, Elvis, Paul McCartney, Keith Richards and Jimmy Page.

Poets, Bards and Balladeers create their tapestry of art and then hand them over to us mear mortals to carry on their dreams. Thank you for letting us remember these artists who left us with us memories. Their songs will generate another group of such people. Thanks for the memories!!

Rest in peace.
I love so many of their songs but I believe their greatest hit would be All I have to do is dream, every guitarist would know how to play that but when I first took up singing, the song I sang then was their "Walk Right Back". I did blog about it here:

Hi suituapui,
Thank you for the lovely tribute and your experience with the EVERLY's music.
They came well before CLIFF and the rest, partnered in the 50's by CONNIE FRANCIS, CHUCK BERRY and KING ELVIS.

The Everly Brothers are one of the earliest and popular singing duets in the 1950s. Although they are no longer around, they left behind many beautiful memories with many hit records from 1950s onwards. We can still hear them singing in CDs or watch them performing on Youtube. Hard to believe that in the brink of an eye, another international icon has left us too soon !

Thanks to all who took some time to comment.

Regretfully, ace-drummer CHARLIE WATTS has also passed away.
This happened just a day after DON EVERLY's death.
RIP to both.
May they rock the heavens with the same music they rocked the earth with.

"Once again, Henry, thank you so much for sharing your interesting stories in tribute to the Everly brothers... I can only imagine the vivid accounts of the fun times you experienced (set in familiar surroundings...Changi!...) during a time when so much in popular music was just coming into play.
How cool was that!
"All I have to do is dream", "Let it be me" "Bye bye love" unique to the the Everly brothers, shall live on.
