My vote goes to Reggie Verghese of the Quests. Next will be Horace Wee.
I was blown away when Reggie played the Shadows' MAN OF MYSTERY when he was with the CHECKMATES.
Reggie Verghese is always my favourite. Since my school days.
For rock n blue is Jimmy Appudurai.
Reggie Verghese.
I agree with Ivor Lesslar .
Thanks guys for response. I would not leave you out IVOR. Ha, ha.
IVOR LESSLAR.
There is one more rock guitarist I like.
He is SOON.
He has faded away.
I have jammed with him before.
There you go IVOR, one of the best, even today
Interestingly. October Cherries is not even included in the list of bands. Their album, Dreamseller, convinced me that their lead guitarist, Pete Diaz, is the best. Original riffs and how they blend in with the songs.
watch perform as a Great Music Fan.
Reggie Verghese of The Quests, Benny Chan of The Checkmates (in AussieLand today), Robert Suriya of Naomi & The Boys, the late Victor Woo of The Trailers & Dickie Buoy of The Silver Strings. Derrick Fitzgerald of The Thunderbirds. And from The Flybaits we had Victor Kway & Rex Goh who went on to play with the International Aussie Band Air Supply.
Matthew & The Mandarins had 4 good guitar players : the late Neil Alexander, Michael Png (also played Pedal Steel Guitar), Derrick Danker (now in Australia) & the late Guitar & Pedal Steel Guitarist Yeo Peng Khoon, who started by playing with Don Nonis & His Mavericks. Tony Shotam of The Ex-periment with vocalist Joe Chandran (now known as Joseph Aaron). Both Australians now.
Rock & Blues Guitarists like Jimmie Appadurai-Chua & L T Soon of The Straydogs, Alam Shah of Pests Infested & S'pore's Jimi Hendrix Ray Anthony of Fried Ice. He was also a founding member of the band Heritage.
Sorry if I left out a few bands
We must also not forget those pre-60's S'pore Pop Scene guitarists. Great Players like Harry Martnez (he who tuitioned many later Spore Pop Guitarists)
For me hard to rate ONE becase all were good in their own way.
Also Derrick Fitzgerald and Alam Shah.
Sorry Andy (I left out),
all late: Sunny Bala, Christie Joseph, Maurice Patton (also played Hawaiian Guitar). Vintage S'pore Guitarists not forgotten (all late) : Tony Danker, George Hendrix, Barney Mourier, Dolly Topaz, Jimmy Tupaz & many more. At last count Robert Suriya lives on Guam. And the late Neil Alexander was also a founding member of Don Nonis's Mavericks.
If have to vote for another I will vote for Horace Wee.
Andy, to be honest, I'm not good enough to judge.
But which lead guitarist I like best ?
Well, my choice would be Horace Wee who played with the RTS Band.
Sorry Andy
to vote is like asking to choose which food or song is better.
They were all good and I can say that Horace Wee was the one who introduced innovation in music with his musical instruments.
Guess Singapore had a big pool of musical talent.
There are too many good lead guitarists here in Singapore!
Most are close friends of mine and some have left us!
I would consider them all the best!!!
Ivor Lesslar
Reggie Verghese.
Foo Jong Fook
I agree with Ivor Lesslar .
Andy Young
