Joss Stone - The Best Blues Lady Since Aretha - Andy 60s Music

Having been attracted to the latest trend of music up to the 80's, there is much to be said about the 'new' genres of music [if there are any].

So I won't argue on this point. Looking at reliable statistics, 'rock' and 'pop' are still at the top of the international hit parade but at merely 20 percent of the ideal, 'blues' seems to be near the bottom of the rung. Or 'soul'...

I have been listening and watching this lovely lady on media for some time now and think she is one of the best outcome in the international pop music scene. And she doesn't only sing the blues or merely dish covers of 60s songs as others would.

Joss Stone is the ultimate when she revives pop oldies and would be a gauge for youth to appreciate what great singing is all about. She has many original albums - comfortable ones for me -  comes from Beatles and Rolling Stones country and has the most soulful voice since Franklin. She comes on stage bare-footed but with class, ties her trademark piece of linen on the microphone stand and hums her song. The crowd screams, her sultry voice attracts. To me, she's different, definitely not commercial. No gimmicky costumes, no fancy wigs, just her soul exposed.

Do listen to Joss Stone and you come back to reality, with real music, real lyrics and real expressions from within. Now you know why I have temporarily left my 'time warp', as Michael Bangar describes it, to enjoy the very enchanting Joss, both voice and person. You don't need to appreciate the blues to appreciate this young lady's songs.

You should come back to sing.

Thank you Joss.

Comments always welcome.

I heard of Joss Stone from her first recordings on CD in the early part of the 2000s .
The Soul Sessions,Mind Body and Soul plus some live performances on DVD. I came across her recordings while browsing through a whole lot CDs in a store. Ah yes, does anyone remember the innumerable hours spent browsing for recordings and always hoping to find a gem!
On that day I found a gem. It was unbelievable to find a young, very tall and pretty English girl had soaked up all the very best vibes, exuding the inflections and emotion of R&B, traditionally the realm of the African American!
The American music community embraced her immediately. Since all those years she has obviously matured and is an R&B icon. Just to categorise her as a “blues singer” is incorrect! In the tradition of Aretha, she moves easily in Soul, Gospel, Blues and the cultural mainstream of Black American music.

Thank you Horace.
A fantastic write-up.
Like you, she's the best there is.

Powerful vocals.
Reminiscent of ETTA JAMES and with her low and husky soulful rendition of a classic.
Certainly a spell is cast on me.

Hey Wayne,
From a singer of your calibre, you know your preferences.
Thanks for your heartfelt comment.

Andy,
I have started following her when she first started her music career. I've bought some of her albums, but after a short while, I discontinued, as my interest in blues has waned.

Thanks Steve,
I can understand. In SG and as a part time busker, spectators and audiences love pop, rock and social music rather than blues.

Appreciate your comment since you are always a rocker yourself.

Yes, I just watched. She has got her own style and for the two songs, though she is singing with a high pitched but not actually power pact.

I have listened to Joss Stone singing her various songs and although I have to admit she has a lovely voice, she however lacks something in her voice. The missing ingredient is the physical loss of what the many coloured singers suffered and reflected it in their voices and in their spirits. Joss Stone is a white lady trying to be someone she cannot be. Sorry but I guess the likes of Ela, Aretha, Billie and such divas are immortal in their own unique right.

I applaud you Cedric for your frank and forthright comment about JOSS STONE.
A point well taken I am sure with many but she has a good voice with a lot of feel and to me,
she entertains the crowd, which is what all singers and musicians must aim to achieve.

Yours is a positive comment, coming straight to the point.
I appreciate it.

Thank you.
