Wild Attractiveness: Taiwan Lady Drummer A Hit

 MORE THAN 3

 UP T0 17,000 VIEWS, 50 CHATS, COMMENTS

Seen this video nearly a year ago but if you missed it, turn the speakers out loud.  This percussionist's stories are all over the internet.  She has more than *three million views and about 200,000 likes on her Facebook.  So Danny Boy, John Cher, Oliver Bala and the other Silver Strings drummers who helped us during our gigs, can you beat this one?

She has confidence and plenty of class! From the You Tube recording this young and pretty lady does an eyeful and entertaining street performance with the drums before her.

Yes, she is a busker on the streets of Taiwan.  But what a busker!  According to a comment on this posting, her name is Luo Xiao Bai (羅小白) but calls herself S. White (Small White = Xiao Bai?).

She is not giving a drum display but is accompanying a song she is listening to from her ear-piece.  Watch her right hand and drumstick twirls. She's at one with the percussion, an artistic blend. Enjoy!

DkS398 says:

I'm a young drummer myself (17) and I wasn't really that impressed with her skills, like everyone else saying she's a amazing and stuff.

The title 'amazing' goes to guys like Marco Minnemann, Buddy Rich, Louie B., Chris Coleman, Royster Jr, Steve Gadd, Gene Hoglan, Mike Mangini, Mike Portnoy, Steve Adler, Bernard Purdie, John Bonham, Keith Moon and list continues.

Those guys are amazing and great drummers. I'm not trying to be rude but from an honest, experienced drummer's point of view, she's not bad. Really she's not, but she is definitely not amazing.

min suga says:

Damn, this girl so unbelievably amazing and the thing I really, really love other than the awesome drumming, is the way she looks. I don't know if anyone else noticed but she looks so, so, so happy and is enjoying her time. I love it !

At her level, she is pretty amazing. You can't compare her to Gene Krupa can you?

anonymous says:

I tell you, she is the best female street drummer I've ever seen. Showmanship is of utmost importance for street drummers. The ability to twirl the sticks in a number of ways and to throw and catch the stick as it comes down, while in play is awesome.

It is a veritable skill what every drummer would naturally wish to have. It is an amazing talent that won the admiration so many spectators as many other drummers could not do. Showing skin and even resorting to tricks like burning of the drum sticks that

I saw in one vid are cheap attempts to charm spectators. But they simply are not what you would consider as talent and not worthy of praise.

Comment anyone?

Original, punchy but not amazing except for her showmanship which was eye catching... Given her relative youth she has immense potential to develop as a top class drummer.

Thank you Oliver. Coming from a drummer that's a real compliment.

I am totally baffled by how dead the audience is.
Not a single person is bobbing their head. =(
I was moving like crazy just watching this from a laptop!
If I were filming her, I'd set my camera on the ground and STILL be jamming out!
Great job girl!! May you go places!

That's ALL the applause she gets? I would throw money at her and demand an encore... After which I would throw the rest of my money. Someone get this girl a record deal so I can give her money for a CD...

ozwalkr said...

Not only is her drumming dead on and amazing on its own, but she also has the added bonus of the stick twirls and her own extra movements being exactly in sync with what she is doing. Definitely in a higher class, she is someone that DESERVES a place in the industry. Her energy and vibrancy is contagious. She is also singing it to herself, i caught her doing the lead in to the hook.

(All three comments above were taken from the You Tube posting. Singaporeans would provide some applause wouldn't they?)

HI Andy

She plays well for her age and the plus point is she also has got the look.

Thanks for sharing.

Cheers

Hi Andy. Thks for clip.. I m inclined to agree with Dr Tony S. Such solo display cannot adequately qualify a "good" drummer. A drummer can be appraised only when playing different types of music with a full band. Used to play with a very good hotel lounge keyboardist who played and sing by himself. But when with a band, he can make his fellow musicians vomit blood. Same with drummers. Hving said all these, I enjoyed her display. Cheers!

Thank you all for the different comments and views. I thought she handled her drumming well despite listening to the melody from her earpiece. As I mentioned on my posting, at her level (young, amateur, busker) she's a darling and, given time, as suggested by Oliver Bala, she could be a smash hit (pun?).

She's got that X-factor many drummers don't have. Sensuality and a wild attractiveness that make audiences want to watch and listen to her play.

TAN SOO KHOON (FACEBOOK) said...

I saw this video some time ago. Thanks for posting. She's awesome and worth watching again. You can tell she's really enjoying herself.

ANDY: Pop Music Not Pills. © said...

Thanks Soo Khoon. Yes I always thought so the moment I saw the video. She's young, full of energy, confident, instinctive and possessing that x-factor no one can deny. Thanks to IT and You Tube we can watch her again and again.

Soo Khoon knows what he's talking about. A former MP he's also a band-boy at heart, actively playing the guitar today in his own studio with top Singapore music makers beside him.

Andy, just visited your blog. In the 60s I was interested in a different kind of music: musicals by Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lowe and Lerner, crooners like Bing, Dean etc. Strangely, had no interest in Elvis. Quite like Pat Boone.

Thanks for the memories.

ANDY: Pop Music Not Pills. © said...

Thank you for reading the blog. The musicals/artistes you mentioned were popular in the 50's and I did mention them during the earlier postings.

You need to explore this blog since there are about 1,500 articles. I wrote about 'The King and I', 'My Fair Lady', 'Sound of Music', etc., about 20 postings in all under MUSICALS (Content Bar on right side of blog under AT A GLANCE).

Sometimes unique artistes on You Tube or Sites are mentioned to interested readers. This lady drummer is one.

Hope you will visit again.

Honestly theres always going to be male musicians that will criticise females with natural giftings. All i see is a young lass with a learning craft, that with diversity of other genres under her belt she definately has a place in our awesome industry! It would be hard as the crowds are soooo conservative she really doesnt get them to engage... in the right format in a band as a chick drummer she will be fantastic in a few years

ANDY: Pop Music Not Pills. © said...

Hey Steve,

How true! How true! So well expressed. Thank you. She's already so fantastic now, what more in a few years. Do visit this blog again Sir.

3 million viewers when I first featured her in June 2015. Now 6 months later she has 10.5 million viewers.

What more proof?

i'm not a drummer, so my opinion is coming from just a fan. she is amazing because she's a complete performer in that she knows how not to just play the drums but to entertain as well. she is a good example of somebody that's doing something that she really likes and enjoys. WOW!

ANDY: Pop Music Not Pills. © said...

Thank you all so much for the comments. It's one of the most popular postings and has received nearly 4,000 viewers to date.

Yes, it's true. I hope she is on stage and performing before the Taiwanese audience who loves her just as much.

Such talent should be recognised and be paid.

JAY.H. said...

When other drummers say "Original, punchy but not amazing" or "Such solo display cannot adequately qualify a 'good' drummer", i am inclined to think they are just jealous that this girl rocks and a lot of people dig her talent. At the end of the day, it is what non-drummers think and like that defines if a drummer is "good" or not. Pigeonholing by saying "good" is onky if you can play as part if a band is a one-track mode of thinking that is stuc in the past. Evolve or get left behind.
S.White and her buddy Vela Blue are totally awesome drummers who bring the whole package of skill, show(wo)manship, attitude and love of the performance to the table and nothing negative that other drummers say can ever detract from that.

Hi Jay H.,

That's the most refreshing piece of writing I've seen these last few years. You are absolutely right when you mentioned:

"At the end of the day, it is what non-drummers think and like that defines if a drummer is 'good' or not."

I've also learnt a new word: 'onky'. I'm evolving and hope I won't get left behind.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for the pointers you provided.

Please write in again when you can. I appreciate your visit.

I know this article is old, but let me first say wow!!! What a fantastic drummer she is. Style and showmanship is top notch, along with amazing charisma. She definately has the x factor. Can't stop watching her perform, she has a way of brightening my day even when my day isn't all that bright. What a happy person she is

I've been watching these asian girl drummers for the past week, on and off. They are ALL good. But after about a week Cyndee stands at the top. Maybe not by much but she's up there.

I like the way she kind of backhands that far right cymbal sometimes. She's just fun to watch.

This girl is amazing, that is for sure. She has tons and tons of talent. Drumming is boring to watch usually, but this girl is great! She plays as well as any drummer I have seen, and she is a showstopper. When I see big bands playing, the drummer doesn't do too much most of the time, only when they have a solo. But this girl is non-stop entertainment from start to finish. I know she will be a huge star soon.

ANDY: Pop Music Not Pills. © said...

Thank you anonymous.
Yes you are right.
She is very agile, set on the drums and a good entertainer too.
A showstopper indeed and like you said, not easy to solo all the time.
She is already a huge star, considering that this post is about 7 years old.

Do visit again.
Appreciate you coming over.
