The Silver Strings 6 May 2018 Ceylon Sports Club Singapore
The biggest gig happened this May 2018. It was a full house, hot, hot, hot, including the venue itself. Sweltering like a steam bath, Ceylon Sports Club with its quaint and colourful facade and age-old decor, was the ultimate venue for the Silver Strings Reunion gig.
This club was set amidst buildings like the Khalsa House, the Civil Service Club and a huge football field along Balestier Road, with old pre-war houses scattered around the vicinity.
On Sunday 6 May, time stood still when Rickie Chng's Fender Strat screamed, Savage, The Silver Strings opening number.
It was like going back through the ages and into the '50s. With songs like Babyface, Pretty Blue Eyes, Hippy Hippy Shake, The Young Ones and Kiss Me Quick, the evening was transformed into mid-20th Century intoxication.
Recycled teenagers shouted and clapped in unison, as the human jukebox serenade provided by Michael Bangar, John Cher, Nick Stravens and Audie Ng burnt more music fuel into the already hot house Hall above the Club's retro-bar.
No silver steel strings from the Fenders were spared that evening as the five boys strummed and drummed their music playing 50's, 60's and 70's music.

Andy Young and Veronica Young with Jerry Fernandez and his Neu Faces were around to lend their voices to the already frantic crowd.

Michael Lee:
Hi, Andy good show. I returned from Singapore to Sydney on 6 May. I have told Rickie (lead guitarist), "That is a very good Fender Stratocaster you are having." This is my humble advice. Hang on to it all you can. Money doesn't always buy you a good guitar of any kind. Cheerio to one and all. Keep on rocking and rolling. Cheerio from Sydney.
Stephen Han:
Getting up close with some memorable photos of Veronica Young, the Millie Small Of Singapore, Andy Young, the Paul Anka of Singapore and Audie Ng the leader of Silver Strings.
The Reunion started with “Savage” a Shadow’s song by The Silver Strings. Michael did an R N R number entitled “Kiss Me Quick”, while his friend, Dick sang “Runaway”. Then came Andy with his wonderful story of Paul Anka and his rocking rendition of “Mean Woman Blues.”
Fabian Foo:
Rarely hear John singing but when he does, it must be good. Cheers to you and more to come next.
Mr Hong:

Hi Andy,
ReplyDeleteIt was a good size crowd and an interesting looking club. I am glad it went well and good luck for future shows.
Regards
Steve
"Thanks to Hock Seng n team for the effort for Sunday night's reunion concert. In particular my appreciation to Hock Seng, Jega, Roy, Shubashini, Sydney and Loga.
ReplyDeleteOf course kudos to Audie and his entire team. I cannot describe their performance any better than SUPERB. Thanks all. If I missed out anyone inadvertently I apologise."
From the President of Ceylon Sports Club
Mr Lukshumayeh.
Thanks, guys for helping Silver Strings put up such an awesome show. Appreciate.
Cheers.
Really admire the energy and talent of all of you including Veronica and Andy (who btw sounded really good last evening too.)
ReplyDeleteWell done, everyone was very happy last night, Sir! Keep it up.
ReplyDeleteGreat show Audie and Jerry. Veronica was marvellous to belt out songs with such gusto at 70.
ReplyDeleteFantastic evening. Pity the venue was so warm.
Thanks to all who attended the show and wrote in. Also those who wrote on FACEBOOK. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteHonestly? Audie's band was very good too. We must all watch them one night.
Feels like the gold old days, no air-con malls. Now we are all spoilt to the bones... anyway your show was really, really good.
ReplyDeleteWell done, the show was really good.
ReplyDeleteWow! Like enjoying good food in an overcrowded hawkers' centre.
ReplyDeleteThe bass was like butter to a cake. It gave a rich, textured and distinct flavour. It was so fluid that at times it sounded like it's coming from an acoustic double bass drawn with a bow. A solid Fender in the hand of a seasoned player who can do magic to the bottom line.
Unlike the Hofner you played the last time (at Kallang Theatre), the notes from the first fret sounded crystal clear. The last note on every piece always ended in perfect harmony.
What a night!!! It was more than amazing. My friends were thanking me profusely for recommending me this concert to them. I tell you, we were entertained from the word go.
ReplyDeleteSome of us were dancing at the side towards the end of the concert.
Thank you so much for such an entertaining night. I know you are all worked really really hard to bring us such a fab show. Kamsiah.
You guys gave a superb performance.
ReplyDeleteWonderful and fantastic performance. Enjoyed the evening.
ReplyDeleteThanks for videos on YouTube, one of the most enjoyable concerts I attended in a long time... well done! The heat and 'nostalgic setting' helped to transport us back to the good old days, like an old school hall. LOL.
ReplyDeleteSimply wonderful.
ReplyDeleteAndy! Keep on ROCKIN'.
Saw all the videos on the Tube. You guys still got it. Keep on making our kind of music, guys.
Ya, you do have some attractive fans, pal.
ReplyDeleteSilver Strings still rule the local oldies groups.
Me not there? But Happy seeing you Guys There. Cheers

ReplyDeleteThe reunion concert with the Silver Strings and their resident singers,Andy and Veronica was a night to remember.I was transformed back to the 50s and 60s listening to the lovely voices singing good oldies and wonderful music by the band.

ReplyDeleteIndeed many thanks again to all who commented on this post and those who attended the show.
Hola John,, did U say SAVAGE of the sixties by The Shadows n d flip side was Peace Pipe,,when l was a kid this instrumental number was one of my most haunting piece,,the title itself was wild n restless n socks me in,,not to mention d Apache war path beating on the drums also the Fierce Eagle's Shrieking of the Electric Twanging Guitars,it does send out a Screeching Message to wake Up ,,A real Blast from the Past, imagine that as the Opening act, phew Holy BabiUU l would if l could if there is a recording l'll buy it straight away without delay,,!!??😁😁😍😍👌👍✌🎸🎸🎸🎷🐎🐎🎶🎶🍷🍷🍾🍾🌟🌟
ReplyDeleteHi Eric. Thank you as always for your imaginative response. You are indeed right. Peace Pipe on the other side of the EMI single. So it was two for the price of one. Similarly Quartermasters Store on the flip side of Apache. Thank you for sharing. Cheers from SG.
ReplyDeleteThanks to STEPHEN HAN, RICHARD TOH, ANGELA LEOW and JOHN CHER (every reader knows him, so no photo) for the photographs on my blog. I have acknowledged you all with your photographs on the page.

ReplyDeleteGood to hear you and your band mates still playing, andy!
ReplyDeleteI am amused by eric bronsonwong hong kong comment..( peace pipe/savage/apache.. Screeching Message to Wake Up ). i suppose it must have been something else (no pun intended quoting eddy cochran) in those days. then Jimi Hendrix came along with his wild man from Borneo guitar and hair on fire and watching youtube of that show of "wild thing" the look on the faces of the audience was like "what is this fella doing ? good golly holy molly batman?"
LOL i was still still doing cliff richard please don't tease for larry lai's talentime rediffusion with my brother's classmate raymond anthony 's band . i asked him right after his band played to back me up as i was next so i did not have to do it acapella.
unknowst that years later, ray and i were to meet again to form , oh well, you know that power trio with that ayer batu goreng funny monicker .. which during practise of our first song i'm so glad (cream) i am sure some of our neighbour at ray's dad house must have asked, "who's strangling the cat?" LOL.
and now, some 200 years later, and 2 millions miles away, i am once again making Screeching Message to wake Up ..with my guitar. andy, you said my music was total disarray in april 2017. well, that was kind of tame compared to this latest song (my first metal composition). aptly entitled Tan Man Gone Berserk... the complete version uploaded this morning..

WARNING could be hazard to slow moving creatures but perfect for those fast moving flying foxes who like to get something better than caffeine to blow their weekend away
LOL PEACE AND HAPPY MOTHERS DAY TO EVERYONE!
Thanks Matt. Always interesting to hear from you. To make your message more readable I've paragraphed them.
ReplyDeleteTake care, good Sir.
