A Tongue In Cheek Song Trail:
The wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on Saturday 19 May 2018 @ St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, would encourage BRF (British Royal Family) fans to think of songs the two young lovers would dance to for their first ballroom embrace as a married couple.
I can only think of three popular songs. They are, The Wedding March by Mendelssohn, the pop hit, The Wedding by Julie Rogers and the everlasting:
Here comes the bride, Here comes the bride
Here comes the bride, With the big backside...
(Or the original: All dressed in white.)
So I was surprised when told that it is customary for western weddings to have a special piece of music for the bride and bridegroom's first dance. Have you heard of this practice? Not in the east.

perform Stand By Me (Ben E. King)
When Prince Harry's elder brother William was betrothed to Kate Middleton they chose an Elton John big hit, Your Song. Sir Elton is always around the Royals, once re-composing a Marilyn Monroe number into, Candle In The Wind for Princess Diana.
According to website articles, They Say It's Wonderful by Irving Berlin, I've Got You Under My Skin by Ole Blue Eyes (Frank Sinatra) and Stand By Me by Ben King had been chosen by other royalties as their first dance song.
And with a song in mind, the couple glided to the floor. Maybe they rock and roll or shimmy in their wedding finery. There are websites after websites of these songs available so I'll just provide my personal ones because Singaporeans are not familiar with this custom.
Think lyrics when you read the titles:
Genuinely Sweet Ones
All of Me - Frank Sinatra
Can't Take My Eyes Off You - Andy Williams
You're The Right One - Dean Martin
Young and Beautiful - Elvis Presley
Sweetheart Tree - Johnny Mathis
Your Song - Elton John
The big car runaway for Harry and Meg |
You Are My Theme For A Dream - Cliff Richard
Sway - Michael Buble
Fascination - Nat King Cole
Teach Me Tonight - Nat King Cole
Only You - The Platters
That's my lot, short indeed.
So what's their song gonna be my dear readers? Make a guess?
Now for this other lot. If you want your life partner to stay away from the dance floor because you don't know the difference between a waltz and a fox-trot, then play one of the following. Perhaps you realise you've made a mistake and wish to back out asap.😛
Genuinely Sour Ones:
How Can I Tell Her - Lobo
Your Cheating Heart - Ray Charles
Mean Woman Blues - Elvis Presley
A Place In The Sun - Engelbert Humperdinck
Please Release Me - Engelbert Humperdinck
Another One Bites The Dust - Queen
You've Lost That Loving Feeling - Righteous Brothers
Don't Go Breaking My Heart - Elton John
Do You Really Wanna Hurt Me - Culture Club
Mrs Robinson - Simon and Garfunkel
I Hate Myself For Loving You - Joan Jet/Blackhearts.
A Dear John Letter - Skeeter Davis/Bobby Bear
Here's one which should never ever be played for dance music. Somebody Bad Stole The Wedding Bell. Sent by Stephen Han, this song is a disaster!

Seriously though, let's wish the royal couple, Prince Harry and Ms Meghan Markle the happiest wedding ever and may they be blessed with many beautiful children.

Remember the powerful rendition of “The Wedding” by Julie Rogers in the 60s?
ReplyDeleteHow about “Get Me To The Church On Time”
ReplyDeleteVery good choices Stephen. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteCheeky me! Keep thinking of The Queens’ Another One Bites the Dust.
ReplyDeleteYou are right Mr Michael Fonseca, it's on the list of cheeky wedding songs. Thank you. You've got a great sense of humour. :-)
ReplyDeleteYou guys can choose a better song..i will just wait here heeeeeee
ReplyDeleteELTON JOHN will be a guest at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding, but the pair will be dancing to another pop icon’s hit, it has been revealed.
ReplyDeleteIt’s understood the pair have asked close pals to help them put together a “fun and bouncy” playlist.
Whitney Houston’s ’80s hit, 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)' is tipped for the first dance.
Hi, Andy, for the important and happy event for the couple's wedding, I still think Cliff's song, Congratulations fits the occasion. The lyric in this song is also meaningful ! Thanks.
ReplyDeleteOver two thirds of the nation, 69 per cent, agreed that couples who listen to music together, stay together, proving that music really is the food of love.
ReplyDeleteAnd when it came to the first dance song at weddings, Brits favourite choice was Elvis Presley’s 'Can’t Help Falling in Love with You', according to research at Sonos.
Whether Harry and Ms Markle will dance to ‘The King’ at their wedding reception remains to be seen.
Bryan Adams’ '(Everything I do) I Do It For You' and Eric Clapton’s 'Wonderful Tonight' were the next most popular first dance choices.
Thanks, FL and Sui Pang for the immediate response to this post. 'Congratulations' is definitely one of the best and most appropriate choices for a royal wedding, especially if it's coming from SIR CLIFF RICHARD.
ReplyDeleteAnd Sui Pang is standing by the sideline to see the fun.
Sorry to say, she doesn’t look down to earth type..
ReplyDeleteIt’s not going to last.
Just a vision I see!
Maybe this song suits you - “Somebody Bad Stole The Wedding Bell”.
ReplyDeleteHeard of the other song?
ReplyDeleteTo each his own
"According to insiders, the couple has gone against convention for their ceremonial boogie, which will kick-start the star-studded reception on 19 May.
ReplyDeleteBizarrely, the couple is said to have chosen Whitney Houston’s 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)' to soundtrack their very first dance as husband and wife.
A rather unconventional choice, it's all party of a 'fun and bouncy' playlist, according to The Sun.
They say that the evening's soundtrack is deliberately designed to be tongue-in-cheek for maximum frivolity among the 1,200 wedding guests.
A number of other tracks from the 1980s are also expected to be aired, reports the Mirror.
As if that wasn't enough, there's also set to be live music from special guest Elton John, who cancelled two Las Vegas concerts to attend the royal event at Windsor Castle.
Insiders say a grand piano will be onside for the crooner to play during the reception."
Right on, "Love and Marriage" by Mr Frank Sinatra.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations and so happy for the Royal family.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes to Prince Harry and Meghan💖🤩💖
Sir Elton John performed at the reception.
ReplyDeleteThe singer had been asked by the bridegroom to perform, according to Kensington Palace, which said in a statement: "Sir Elton performed for the newly married couple in recognition of the close connection he has with Prince Harry and his family."
