Tracy Chapman: Honour Yatie Nasir Give Me One Reason

It's a wow factor when I first heard her sing. Published exactly a year this Smule video by YATIE NASIR is one of the best blues renditions of the Tracy Chapman favourite, Give Me One Reason.

A powerful voice indeed, but Ms Yatie received 1,500+ viewers to date. I had expected something different when I first watched her, but man is she good.

The video is a little short though but her rendition is gutsy and from the heart. And very bluesy. Wow!!! She should enter a talent quest.

Thank you Yatie.

Not much about Yatie on her YouTube post but her connection is below. Thanks also to Jimmy Chng from The Decibels and Smule video for the introduction.

And, BTW, check Comments below. Lots of them about Yatie.

So to all blues fans...

Connection:

Chapman wrote this song in the late 80's but only had it released officially in 1996. It had won many awards including a Grammy and reached number 3 on the Hot US 100 charts.

Found in her album New Beginning, this song was included. The album sold 3.8 million copies, her biggest selling recording since 1991. Some artistes had covered it, including Eric Clapton, Junior Wells and Kelly Clarkson.

Wow! What a powerful voice. Good diction. Cannot imagine this is an Asian voice.

I'm no blues fan but she really got my ears glued to her wonderful rendition.

Oh, a friend of mine sent this to me. And according to him, she sells Assam Pedas in Melaka.

OK. Won't rave about it. Detect a Malay accent here and there and slurring of words. Guess I disagree with the good diction comment on the blog.

Her vocal is power. She's got that jazzy voice.

I have yet to hear the whole song. So unable to tell if she's able to portray the whole piece well enough because a song like that with similar lyrics is very hard to sing well since it needs to be expressed with different emotions.

    Just my humble thought.

Frankly, she has got a powerful voice and I have just heard a little to know she is good.
Yes, agree, she has the potential to be a good singer.

Difficult to judge based on one song and with possible miming using another person's voice. Need to hear in person live to consider her singing.

Fantastic voice. That's a reality check. Don't judge a book by its cover.

  15. Thanks for all your comments above as they came fast after publication. Shows how much interest this video has raised.

My question was, "What do you think of her singing?" and got straight answers about her singing style and voice.

    Appreciate the immediate responses.

Wow, what a powerful voice. Andy, I don't know anything about music, so this is the opinion of an untutored person.

If one doesn't look at the video, one wouldn't know the singer is Asian. A Bit of difficulty catching certain words but pretty clear diction on the whole.

I will say pretty impressive. Having not heard the original or know the lyrics of the song, cannot tell if emotion-wise, whether well conveyed or not.

    What is your critique?

Sorry at the outset I'm a music layman. This is how I feel about it... For an Asian singer, she is very good. Agreed. She possesses very powerful vocal cords. Her diction is excellent.

You know, when I first listened closely to the original singer, Tracy Chapman, honest I couldn't figure out "the real reason."

But when I listened to Yatie crooning out the song, wow, the pronunciation of the lyrics were so crystal clear that I could practically comprehend the son without much ado.

I really don't know. But for someone to be able to enjoy your singing, he/she must first know your words unless he/she has the song sheet in front. No comprehension, no enjoyment, so no appreciation. That's how I feel about any song.

So to me, diction is the prelude to appreciation.

    Sorry, a layman mumbling. Hahaha.

Good but sometimes it takes more than a good voice in this business. Looks, knowing the right people, be at the right place. It's also a package thing.

This genre is not the most popular too.

Plus: sounds like TC, good vocal range.
    Minus: no showmanship at all.

She should stop selling Assam Pedas and get into show business: Powerful voice with good bluesy intonation.

  23. Let's hope her future will be PEDAS (hot) and not ASSAM (sour). Thanks Oliver for the cute response and remark.

Meanwhile, we wish YATIE all the best.

    Andy,
Yatie Nasir has a powerful voice. She needs a little coaching on how to express the lyrics to feelings. The echo is a little heavy, I feel.

  26. Thanks, Merlin and Anonymous.

Hopefully, Yatie will read your comments and accept that she has a good voice and talent. For me, I think she has confidence too.

Hi Andy hope I don't sound like a repeating gramophone record. I have always said - If you got talent you got it and can do incredible things. This lady can give any American blues singer a good challenge. Cheerio.
