I went into a DVD shop today wanting to buy a movie based on a play about Mozart. Called AMADEUS, I have seen this Academy Award show long ago and could not find it on You Tube.
I asked the Chinese lady in charge, "You got the movie AMADEUS?"
She replied without hesitation, "Yes!" and rushed to the shelves looking for it.
I was so glad having searched for a copy for a long time.
She came back excitedly and handed me a copy of... ARMY DAZE.
'AMADEUS' and 'ARMY DAZE' = SAME, SAME 😭
(ARMY DAZE is a Singapore movie by a local celebrity, comedian, lady impersonator and film director/producer Jack Neo.)
Images: Google.
The same company has another shop at Novena Square with the above sign. Just shows the quality of English communicated in these places.

Ha ha, Andy! :)
ReplyDeleteIt is common knowledge that shoppers in Singapore, whether local or from abroad, have problems with counter sales people who are not able to speak basic English.
ReplyDeleteThere is no intention to make fun of these counter staff but it would be appreciated and appropriate if they are given some simple speech lessons to help them in their daily dealings with customers.
There was another occasion when I went into a shoe shop to buy a pair of SHOE LACES. The girl looked at me, got a little nasty and said, "No have."
I asked another salesgirl and managed to get a pair.
Tough!
Hilarious! I could get you a copy of Amadeus if you'd like.
ReplyDeleteAmadeus was such a depressing show tho :-(

I hope this blog will go out to our youth in Singapore and abroad.
Hi Andy
ReplyDeletein all fairness, Amadeus and Army Daze, do sound remotely alike, most especially for a Chinese educated person. I have experienced conversations with Mandarin speaking friends who said "liver" when they meant "river". Also "sow time" instead of "show time". However, by the same token, I must have mispronounced many many Chinese words without realizing it to my Chinese speaking friends as well!
If I am not wrong, Amadeus was partially filmed in Prague, which I had the opportunity to visit in 87, a few years after the filming of the movie. It is indeed a beautiful and charming city! Mission Imposible (The Movie) similarly had scences done in Prague.
In the year 2000, I was in Istanbul with a couple of friends. Everywhere we went shoe shine boys, waiters, sales people, cab drivers etc kept asking if I knew Jackie Chan. I didn't know why until finally, my friends and I, realized that Jackie Chan was in Istanbul for several months to do filming for "The Incidental Spy". Just for laughs, when we were subsequently at a seaside restaurant, the crew were again asking about Jackie Chan. This time my friend quickly told them I was Jackie's brother! They were thrilled and put on their shirts and posed for photos with me!
For once in my life, I felt like a star!!
Thanks for the nostalgic trip Andy!
Cheers!
John
