SONGS I LOVE:
Mary's Boy Child is a 1956 Christmas song, written by Jester Hairston, first sung by Belafonte and covered by more than 30 singers far and wide.
Mary`s Boy Child (Harry Belafonte)
Long time ago in Bethlehem
So the Holy Bible say
Mary's boy child, Jesus Christ
Was born on Christmas day.
Hark, now hear the angels sing
A new King born today
And man will live forever more
Because of Christmas day.
While shepherds watched their flock by night
And see a bright new shining star
And hear a choir sing
The music seem to come from afar.
Now Joseph and his wife Mary
Come to Bethlehem that night
And find no place to born swee' child
Not a single room was in sight.
Hark, now hear the angels sing
A new King born today
And man will live forever more
Because of Christmas day.
By and by they find a little nook
In a stable all forlorn
And in a manger cold and dark
Mary's little boy was born.
Hark, now hear the angels sing
A new King born today
And man will live forever more
Because of Christmas day.

This is a very nice rendition of Mary's Boy Child by Harry Belafonte. If I am not wrong, he also sang the Banana Boat Song - the one that goes Teh O, Teh O.
ReplyDeleteMerry Christmas and Happy New Year to one and all.
Andy, I like this Christmas song from Harry Belfonte very much. He reall sang this song with his own syle.
ReplyDeleteHi Victor,
ReplyDeleteYes, Belafonte is well-known in the 60s for making the public take notice of Calypso music that has the rhythmic beat of the South Sea islands.
His "Day Oh, Day Oh," is popular just as his "Coconut Woman" and "Mama Looka Boo-Boo." Most listened to is of course, "Island In The Sun" where Singaporeans relate to the lyrics very well.
Thanks BC because this carol is also my favourite, top of the list for Christmas songs. His delivery shows his understanding of the theme of the song, the birth of Jesus Christ, a joyous occasion for most but also a solemn one for others.
ReplyDeleteAndy, this is a wonderful Christmas song and Mr. Belafonte has done the definite version. Hope you had and will continue to have a wonderful Christmas time.
ReplyDeleteHI DMP,
ReplyDeleteIt's really the best version I've heard. A wonderful song dedicated to a wonderful teacher who was born in a manger.
